DJIBOUTI: BENDER DJEDID
The organization « Bender Djedid », translated as « The New city » in order to remind about
the
first
neighborhood built in solid materials in the city of Djibouti, was founded in 1992.
Nowadays,
the
organization enjoys a special status in the Economical and Social Council of the United
Nations.
Its 150
members work together to eradicate poverty and to promote a sustainable human
development.
Basically, Bender Djedid implements social programs for disinherited families, which include
financial
donations, food and material support (for example rehabilitations of accommodations and
construction of
playgrounds). Since then, its actions have become more and more various and now include
actions
for Human
Rights, environmental protection, gender equality: for example, supporting other NGOs to
reinforce the
capacities of the civil society, helping the poorest families, raising awareness about
female
genital
mutilation and working against the HIV/AIDS pandemic…
