Introduction

In 2018, around 1400 refugees and migrants lost their lives by trying to reach Europe’s door, across the Mediterranean Sea. Although there is a reduction in the number of crossings this year, there are still a lot of deaths. Despite the European agreement on migrations in June 2018, no long terms solutions were found to stop this Mediterranean tragedy. That is why we need Euro-Mediterranean actions, based on civil society to find real Remed(i)es for the various issues challenging the Mediterranean region.

The members of the Euro Mediterranean Network of Solidarity (REMEDES) worked since 2011 with migrants and refugees in their countries of origin (Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, etc.) and in Europe. Thanks to concrete and mutual actions on the field (France, Italy, Greece, Spain) REMEDES’ members help migrants and refugees once they reach Europe. REMEDES also acts to prevent migrations and to improve living conditions of migrants and refugees in the host countries in the South (Lebanon, Djibouti, Iraq).

That is why the existence of the Euro Mediterranean Network of Solidarity is essential: gathering 22 members and partners, its vocation is to promote the development of South-South and North-South concerted actions. It aims to strengthen Euro Mediterranean solidarity among populations and to support community life in countries currently experiencing significant changes, where the life of the most vulnerable must be protected.

About

The Euro Mediterranean Network of Solidarity brings together associations from both sides of the Mediterranean. It was founded in 1998 on the SPF's initiative and its goal is to enable members of the Network to think together, to share their experiences on the ground, to promote cooperation between Southern partners, to develop alliances between Northern NGOs to act towards the South and to be more responsive in case of emergency situations in the Mediterranean region.

In this approach of dialogue between both sides of the Mediterranean, the Euro Mediterranean Network of Solidarity sees itself as a complement to governmental work, playing the role of goad for public institutions.

The Euro Mediterranean Network of Solidarity is a "de facto" network, bringing together 22 members and partners from the South and the North. It is structured with a board made up of two Southern partners and two Northern partners.

This board is coordinated by an elected President by the General Assembly, Dr Ismaïl HASSOUNEH.

The Euro Mediterranean Network of Solidarity has several goals:

  • To develop humanitarian projects and to give them the means to act as quickly as possible in case of emergency situations (armed conflicts, natural disasters…)
  • To consult each other in order to initiate and support development projects of the associations working in countries of the South Mediterranean
  • To encourage meetings and intercultural exchanges among young people from different countries of the region
  • To communicate with other networks and with the various European and national institutions in each country, in order to consolidate the basis of our network and to strengthen our capacity of action in the euro Mediterranean region
  • To goad public institutions into action
  • To globalize solidarity

The working themes of our Network are the objectives of the member associations who work to support the most vulnerable people and families:

  • Fight against exclusion, misery and racism
  • Access to education and culture
  • Women's, men's and children's rights
  • Sustainable development
  • Environment
  • Culture of peace
  • Intercultural exchanges

All migrants and refugees are usually committed to their country and cultural roots. Despite the war and economical difficulties, our vision is to help these populations to be in a familiar environment. We don’t pretend to resolve conflicts, however we want to participate to a long term development aid, to preserve the dignity of these people and to promote our values of solidarity

Ismail Hassouneh, President of the Euro-Mediterranean Network of Solidarity (13th of August, 2018)
